The Galaxy S10 Plus and the iPhone XS have already faced the Huawei P30 Pro in our comparisons here at TodoCelular.com.
Now we take the Max variant to compete directly with Samsung's flagship. So, who do you think wins? Let's analyze issues like design, performance, autonomy and cameras to show which one is the best. Here we have two handsets that look very different from each other, but both follow the most current trend minimum edges and cutout on the screen for the sensors.
In the case of the S10 Plus, there's a hole in the display just for the cameras, Yeah, it's plural, for selfies. The iPhone already has a larger cutout, which also has infrared, depth and other sensors. In the end, the screen-to-body ratio is better on the S10 Plus although it has practically the same dimensions of the iPhone, the Galaxy screen is diametrically smaller but it has a larger total area. On the back, Apple repeated the format of the ten-year edition of it's iPhone, with a bump to house the two sensors in semaphore style. Samsung has bet on three horizontal sensors without a bump. Another new feature in the Galaxy is the presence of the headphone jack point, therefore, for the S10 Plus, for having a little more innovation in design and still achieve a body more compact than the rival. They are currently the two most advanced models from two of the world's leading manufacturers but we are used to seeing Android always a few steps behind the iPhone, year after year. The distance is diminishing, it's true, and here we do not have one of the more fluid reps for the little robot but the XS Max is also not the fastest iPhone today. Curiously, these two handsets got the same time in our app opening test both with fifty-three seconds.
Of course, the iPhone scores significantly higher on benchmarks, especially on account of the more powerful GPU which helps a lot in games. And even so, the S10 Plus does not go that bad in comparison with the XS Max in the end, the fluidity and even loading times of the games are better on the Apple device, so point to the iPhone in performance. The screens have different sizes but the difference in inches is small. In area the S10 Plus display is larger. While the iPhone brings an OLED screen, Samsung has created a new technology for the panel of the tenth edition of its main line of smartphones which it called Dynamic AMOLED. For day-to-day use, though, you'll hardly notice the difference. Both are very good with good color calibration, nice brightness for use on the street and in dimly lit spaces. The sound of the two handsets is stereo, using the speakerphone as the second audio channel, and the immersion is good, it does not have much difference in quality - a point for each one in multimedia. The Achilles heel from the flagships has received a good attention from manufacturers in recent times. And yes, the time of use of both the iPhone and the Galaxy S has improved well in these newer generations. But the XS Max is still well behind the competitor in this comparison. Also because the S10 Plus is a very big evolution in this respect, compared to the S9 Plus. We had more than nineteen hours of use on the Galaxy in our standardized test, versus only eleven and a half hours on the iPhone - point for the S10 Plus. The recharge time is not very good on either device, but Apple still insists on including low-power charger in the box which takes three and a half hours to bring the battery from 0 to 100%. The Galaxy S10 Plus needed just over two hours in our test also with the standard charger. One more point for the Samsung model, therefore. Android or iOS? This question even made some sense years ago. but nowadays there is little difference between the two systems for a common user. But let's focus on the extra features that each device offers because the system and the interface itself are things that go from the taste of each one. The S10 Plus has on-screen fingerprint reader, which is a technology long awaited by fans of innovation, in addition to PowerShare, which allows you to recharge the battery from other devices with support for wireless charging and still retains features from predecessors like Bixby, who still does not speak Portuguese, DeX Mode, which transforms the interface into something like computers when you connect to a large screen and IP68 protection to focus on the main ones only. The iPhone no longer has a fingerprint reader, getting the facial unlock only which, at least, is safer than the onde found on Android devices. In fact, there are not many cool things - Animojis have already been copied by many Android manufacturers including Samsung, with My Emoji. At least the protection against water and dust is equal to that of the competitor. And the point then goes to the S10 Plus, again.
TudoCelular already demonstrated in a camera comparison that the S10 Plus wins over the iPhone XS which has the same quality as the Max version in photos.
But let's analyze by points: with good illumination the iPhone delivers more details and a better exposure balance - so, at least in that respect, you gain one point. In low light things change a lot. It is the S10 Plus who records more details, besides delivering a clearer photo. The use of the flash also gives better results for the Galaxy. Portrait Mode is a tie - the S10 Plus captures greater field of view and is better in more challenging scenarios in low light, for example. Despite the light burst, if you have a light source on the board. But Apple's cutout is slightly better, in addition to respecting more the different distances of the objects in the frame. The five times digital zoom in both cases is best in the S10 Plus which still has the ultra-wide camera, not suitable for low-light environments. And there's an extra point for the extra features. In selfies the S10 Plus does a better job with good lighting, while the iPhone can record more details despite some noise in the night photo, incredible as it may seem. Another draw then.
In videos, the iPhone again maintains the three-point difference, by offering a more precise focus, although the stabilization of the S10 Plus is better. The front camera of the iPhone is also better, as is the night recording. Flagships are announced with increasingly pornographic prices here in Brazil, but Apple is still a leader in exaggeration. The XS Max came for R$ 8000 in the most basic version, which has 64GB of storage. In turn, the S10 Plus starts with R$ 5500, but already with 128 GB of space. The prices have dropped in recent times and, of course, the Samsung device can still be found for a lower value than Apple's. And offering more storage in addition to the fast charger included in the set. And that was the missing point for the undisputed victory of the S10 Plus. Apple has, unfortunately, stopped in time in recent years, and people have been less and less excited about its releases for the second half. Even if they're still ahead of competitors in some ways. Software and hardware optimization is still the best, but virtually, all other points are to the advantage of the S10 Plus here in this case. With the camera the iPhone still gets a good fight, but overall, it's also behind the Galaxy.
The battery then, we're not even gonna comment on that. And now I leave the question to you, dear spectator: which is your favorite? Galaxy S10 Plus or iPhone XS Max? And why?
